Computer Systems Design & Audit Practice

Integrated systems, measured ground, and a clear WALK forward.

Dft Sustainable Solution Inc. is a computer systems design studio working from 637 Makwa Pvt, Ottawa - K1K 5A3, Canada (CA), pairing software with hands-on sustainability programs. We map the real movement of waste, energy and money across a building or a campus, then build the tracking systems that keep every finding visible long after the visit ends. Read the full program overview to see how the six services fit together.

Our auditors, retrofit planners and walk leaders treat every engagement like a trail: mark the start, record the ground underfoot, and leave a route the next person can follow without guessing.

Field Audit Page

Six entries recorded on the clipboard

Every engagement begins with a field sheet. The clipboard travels with the auditor, collects six kinds of observation, and returns to the Ottawa desk where our systems team turns the notes into dashboards, retrofit schedules and grant calendars. Nothing here is a one-off report; each entry becomes a trackable record inside the client system we design.

D

Waste Audit Bays

We sort a full day of waste into bays and weigh each stream by hand, then log every kilogram into a live waste ledger. The result is a computer-tracked diversion baseline that shows exactly where contamination starts.

F

Retrofit Plan Runs

Our planners walk the building envelope and mechanical spaces, measuring insulation depth, window condition and lighting load. The findings feed a sequenced retrofit plan with cost bands so a client can stage work across several budget years.

T

Community Walk Desks

Neighbourhood walking audits put residents alongside our staff to record litter hot spots, shade gaps and accessible routes. The desk converts their paper notes into mapped data that municipal partners can act on.

S

Energy Check Windows

A scheduled window of metered readings across a week captures how a facility actually runs, not just how it was designed. We install temporary loggers and design a monitoring layer that keeps reporting after the loggers leave.

W

Grant Watch Reviews

Sustainability funding changes on a short cycle, so our desk watches programs continuously and reviews eligibility against the client profile. Each review produces a prioritised shortlist with deadlines and matching project scopes.

E

School Visit Sittings

Classroom sittings bring the audit method to students, who run their own mini sort and record results on tablets we bring along. The data joins the same system, giving each school a term-by-term view of its own progress.

Beyond the clipboard

Dft Sustainable Solution Inc. works at the seam between computer systems design and professional sustainability services. We build the software a site needs to keep measuring itself, and we staff the field work that produces the first honest reading. From the Ottawa office at 637 Makwa Pvt, Ottawa - K1K 5A3, Canada (CA), teams travel to municipal buildings, campuses, small manufacturers and community centres across the region. Clients reach us at alert@dftsustainable.hair or on +17318793884 to schedule a first trail assessment.

Integrated systems design is the discipline that holds our practice together. A waste bay is not separate from a dashboard; a retrofit plan is not separate from the grant search that funds it. We design the whole route, mark the waypoints, and hand over a record that outlives the engagement. That is why each of the six services above is linked into one shared data model, and why each field visit ends with something a client can keep using.

If your organisation needs a measured starting point, a staged retrofit, a community walk, or a classroom program, begin with the contact desk and we will set the trail head together.

How the Trail Is Marked

A working method, not a brochure promise

The practice grew out of a simple frustration: most sustainability advice arrives as a document that nobody can maintain. Our answer was to make the measurement itself the product, and to design computer systems that hold the measurement in place. The method below describes how a typical engagement travels from the first walk to the final handover.

Four waypoints on every route

Waypoint one, the trail head. A short conversation establishes what the site already knows, what records exist and which decisions are waiting on data. We ask for utility bills, hauler invoices and any previous audits, then identify the smallest useful first step. Clients frequently arrive expecting a full retrofit study and leave with a recommendation to run a waste audit first, because the waste stream often reveals the quickest savings.

Waypoint two, the field record. Our teams work on site with paper sheets and digital logs at the same time. Paper is fast to fill in beside a bin and impossible to fake under pressure; the digital log is what survives the day. Everything recorded in the field is entered before the auditor leaves the property, so a missing weight or an unclear note is resolved while the evidence is still in front of us.

Waypoint three, the system build. Back at the Ottawa office, our designers turn the field record into a client-facing system. Depending on the engagement this might be a simple reporting workbook, a set of automated monthly summaries, or a fuller dashboard with role-based access for facility staff and finance. We build with the tools the client already owns, because a system that needs a new licence rarely survives the first budget review.

Waypoint four, the handover and the return. Every engagement ends with training, documentation and a scheduled return visit. The return visit is where the trail proves its worth: we re-run a portion of the original audit and compare the numbers against the baseline. If the system is not being used, we find out why during that visit rather than a year later when the contract is reviewed.

The method scales from a single community hall to a multi-building campus. What stays constant is the discipline of recording, the honesty of the numbers, and the refusal to leave a client with a document they cannot operate.
